Hints and Tips for a Marquee Wedding

Are you thinking of having a marquee wedding? There may be some things that you might not have thought about to help make your special day the most perfect it can be. There are also many ways to cut costs if you are on a tight budget, think of our marquees as your blank canvas.

There are so many things to think about when planning a wedding that it can be difficult to remember everything, particularly when you are the organizer! We are here to help you with all the details that will make your day run as smoothly as possible.

One of the most important aspects of your marquee wedding is the venue! What kind of venue do you have in mind? Maybe a farm, an open field, a castle, or even your own home? It is always best to start looking for a venue early, particularly if you plan to get married in the summer. Call around some of the venues you like the look of and arrange a viewing, landowners will be more than happy to show you around their site and answer any questions you may have. Once you have a venue in place, you can then begin to think about what you will need to facilitate your wedding.

Catering is also a crucial element of a marquee wedding. This can be very daunting to plan as there are so many variables involved. Depending on the venue you choose for your marquee, it is likely that a separate catering marquee may be required for them to work in. Some questions you may need to ask your caterers would be, ‘How much space do you need for the equipment?’ The answer to this will determine the size of the catering marquee you will require. ‘Do you need a water supply?’ This can be tricky and will depend on the venue you choose for the marquee. You will also need to find out how much equipment your caterers are using as this will have a major impact on the size of the generator you will need.


Do you need a bar? Many people now choose to have either a free bar or a pay bar for their marquee wedding. This would be something that you would need to allocate some space to, and therefore may affect the size of marquee you require. Space for items such as fridges, and possibly a back bar should also be taken into consideration. We can provide a complimentary bar service to all our marquee clients.

Something you may want to consider depending on the size of your wedding and the marquee you have chosen is whether you will need a PA system for speeches or announcements. A microphone may be required for the speeches in larger marquees so that all your guests are able to hear them. We are more than happy to supply this for you should this be required.

A generator, or power source, is crucial to a marquee wedding. If you are planning to have your wedding in an open field, this is a necessary requirement. To help you decide how much power you will need, you will need to ask your DJ or band how much power they will require as well as your caterers. We have found that a large amount of catering equipment can use a significant amount of power, so it is always essential to know how much equipment they will be using to ensure you have enough. If you are having a luxury toilet unit, this will also require power and how much will depend on the size of the unit you need. Other things to consider are fridges if you are having a bar, as well as your lighting for the marquee. We would always recommend that you have more power than the exact requirements, just to ensure that there is plenty of power to last through the evening.


Have you thought about your entertainment needs for the evening? Are you having a DJ or a band? Or both?! Have they specified how much space they will need in the marquee? This may affect the size of the marquee you will need. Do they need any staging? Your DJ may require a table for the equipment, and depending on the type of band you have, they may require extra chairs. Always ask your DJ or band how much power they will need. This will affect the size of the generator, should this be required.

Depending on the time of year you are planning to get married, you may need to consider the need for a heater, after all it is England! If the weather is not looking great for your day, we can supply a heater for you. You may feel the need to have one reserved anyway as even in the summer, the temperature can drop in the evening.

Another thing to consider is whether you will need a luxury toilet unit. Again, this will depend on the venue you choose as to whether these will be required, but if you are planning a reception on a farm for example, or in an open field, we can supply toilet units in various sizes for you.


Other smaller details that you may not have considered may include a cake table. Do you require a separate round table for the cake to stand on? If you are having a buffet, how many tables do you require for the food? You may also need to think about a supplier for your table linen? It is possible that your caterers may be able to supply this for you. Do you need glasses for water and table wine? Do you need any children’s furniture such as small chairs and tables or even highchairs? Would you like the children to have a separate area? This will need to be a factor when deciding on the size of marquee you require. Alternatively, we have had events in the past where there has been a small, separate marquee for the younger guests.

In terms of decorations for your wedding marquee, there are so many options to choose from. Fairy lights look stunning in all styles of marquee and give off a significant amount of light when it gets dark. Bunting is also very popular and can even be combined with the fairy lights on a Capri marquee to create a beautiful effect on the arches. It can be hung all around the marquee and between the centre poles of the Traditional marquee. Hanging lanterns have been extremely popular this season; available in a huge variety of sizes and colours, they are a fantastic way of decorating the marquee and bringing some colour in to suit your chosen theme. We can also supply starlit backdrops, indoor topiary and artificial ivy, as well as a range of dance floors from the traditional oak parquet to the stunning white starlit dance floor. LED uplighting is fabulous in a marquee, especially when it starts to get dark. Available in a colour of your choice, and also in colour changing, LED uplighting is all you need to light your marquee at night and is a great way of in keeping with a colour scheme.

If you are on a budget for your marquee wedding, there are a number of things you can do to help keep costs down. When initially deciding on the size of marquee you require, you will need to consider the space required for the tables and chairs firstly, and then additional items such as a bar and a dance floor. A great way to save space and use a slightly smaller marquee would be to set tables and chairs on the dance floor for the wedding breakfast or buffet, which can then be moved when your entertainment arrives and the wedding moves into the evening.

Our chiavari chairs are a great way to keep costs down if you are looking to have a formal, traditional look for your wedding. While the chairs are more expensive to hire than some other styles, they are supplied with seat pads and the design of them means that they do not require any chair covers. You may find that cheaper styles of chair require chair covers which can increase the cost quite dramatically. You could also decide to not have any flooring in the marquee. While this is likely to be weather dependent, you could decide against matting or hard flooring and have the wonderful, natural grass beneath your feet. Alternatively, a low cost flooring option would be the tightly woven all weather matting. This follows the contours of the ground underneath and is the perfect choice if you don’t like the idea of grass. In order to keep to a budget you may also find that you do not wish to have an entrance marquee. For large marquee weddings we will often put up an entrance canopy which may house a bar. As mentioned, there are ways that you can save space inside the marquees which will prevent the need for an entrance marquee.
